Tanner’s Birthday Ice Cream

When the only thing your husband wants for his birthday is the ice cream he had one time 30 years ago, well, you get to work.

It was Oatmeal-Peanut Butter-Cookie Dough. Oatmeal in the form of oat clusters, peanut butter as a swirl, and chocolate chip cookie dough bites, in a vanilla or sweet cream base.

First, I started searching for oatmeal ice cream recipes, and found one on Serious Eats that cooked the custard with toasted oats that were later baked to make oat clusters. Great. Tons of peanut butter swirl recipes out there, I used one from The Spruce Eats (delicious), and the Ben & Jerry’s recipe for cookie dough.

The oat clusters didn’t work at all, so I used peanut butter granola from Trader Joe’s instead.

Tanner of course cannot be trusted to tell me the truth about whether this ice cream lived up to that treasured memory from childhood, but it wound up being delicious and he seemed to love it.
